Q+A: Happy Feet, Open Doors?
Last month, The Daily Penguin announced that The Maryland Youth Ballet would be opening a studio in downtown Silver Spring. The studio--a second-floor space above furniture retailer Bombay Company--is scheduled to open in January.
One reader known as The Courtyard asked:
Are there going to be public performances there?
I feel like space on Ellsworth Drive should be as open to the public as possible, keeping in line with other uses (restaurants and shops) on that block.
The Daily Penguin emailed Deidre Byrne, spokesperson for The Maryland Youth Ballet, who gave this response:
Our space will NOT be used for performances. We are a professional ballet school.

I'm guessing that Foulger-Pratt had a really tough time leasing that second story space. No retailer wants to be on the second floor. As much as I would have preferred retail, the ballet school will bring more foot traffic (no pun intended) and frankly, more refined (sorry, best word I could think of) clientele other than the roving bands of poorly-mannered kids we frequently see now.
Maryland Youth Ballet is a terrific arts institution, with a ton of classes for adults as well. It's been in Bethesda for decades (where I gather they've had some less than ideal landlord situations) and it's a real boon that it will be coming to downtown Silver Spring, imho.
To me it's preferable to another chain store & a really nice addition to the mix there.
